Generally, LED and all electronic parts will generate heat energy and temperature rise during use or operation.  If the heat dissipation problem is ignored, LED will burn out early due to high temperature. Most of the efficiency of LED lamps will be converted to human beings when they are working. If the heat cannot be exported out of the lamps, it will not reach the life time declared by the plant growth light LED light source. At the same time, the heat will affect the luminous efficiency of LED, causing serious light failure and lamp damage.


The luminous efficiency and life of LED are closely related to the working temperature, showing an inverse relationship. Due to the development of high-power LED technology, plant growth light LED lamps  face severe challenges in thermal management and heat dissipation design, because when the temperature exceeds 100 ℃, the temperature rise will not only reduce the brightness, but also accelerate the deterioration of the lamp body and packaging materials.

Therefore, in addition to the heat dissipation technology of the LED packaging component itself, the heat conduction design of the heat sink of the LED plant lamp is the biggest key to maintain the life of the LED lamp.

In terms of lamp design, LED chip, LED chip substrate, chip packaging, circuit design, system circuit board, heat sink fin and lamp shell all test the R&D capability of LED products in the upstream, middle and downstream. 

The cooling system can be divided into active cooling and passive cooling. Active cooling includes forced cooling by fans, and passive cooling includes natural convection cooling and loop heat pipe cooling.



Forced cooling by fan:

Forced cooling by fan means that the fan generates air convection to dissipate hot air from outside the lamp body. Forced cooling by fan can effectively discharge heat.

 The number of fans shall be determined according to the actual situation during the design of LED plant lamps. As long as there is a good heat dissipation effect, the number of corresponding fans is naturally the less the better. As the number of fans will increases the cost and power consumption of the whole lamp will also increase.



Natural convection heat dissipation

Natural convection heat dissipation refers to the direct contact between the heat sink and the air. The air around the heat sink becomes hot air because it absorbs heat. Then the hot air rises and the cold air drops, which will naturally drive the air to convection and achieve the heat dissipation effect.

With the introduction of high-power lamps , the use of natural convection heat dissipation requires a large heat dissipation surface area, so heat sink skiving fins came into being. Most of them are installed on the back of plant-growth lamps light to provide a large heat dissipation area and enhance the effect of convection heat dissipation. Skiving heat sink is currently used in LED plant lamp industry.
