Product Introduction

Epoxy vs. Press-Fit Embedded Tube Cold Plates: What's the Difference?

Embedded tube cold plates are widely used in liquid cooling systems for power electronics, inverters, and battery modules. Among them, two main manufacturing types exist - Epoxy Cold Plates and Press-Fit (Interference Fit) Cold Plates.
While both embed copper tubes into an aluminum base for liquid cooling, their connection methods create major differences in performance and reliability.

1. Structure and Process

Epoxy cold plates fill the gap between the tube and the base plate using thermally conductive epoxy or silicone adhesive.
Press-fit cold plates, use a precise mechanical interference fit, ensuring direct metal-to-metal contact without any adhesive.

2. Thermal Performance

Epoxy water cooling plates have a thin glue layer that increases thermal resistance, making them suitable for moderate power applications.
Press-fit water cold plates provide excellent heat transfer efficiency due to tight contact between the copper tube and the aluminum plate, ideal for high-power or high-temperature environments.

3. Durability and Reliability

Epoxy may degrade over time under thermal cycling, potentially leading to delamination or leakage.
Press-fit designs offer better long-term stability and vibration resistance, maintaining consistent performance even after repeated heating and cooling cycles.

4. Cost and Application

Epoxy liquid cold plates are more cost-effective and easier to manufacture, suitable for low-cost or mid-power projects.
Press-fit liquid cold plates require higher machining precision and cost more but deliver superior thermal conductivity and lifespan.

In summary

Epoxy liquid cold plates are ideal for cost-sensitive applications, while press-fit liquid cold plates are the best choice for high-performance systems requiring long-term stability and optimal cooling.
