A battery liquid cold plate is widely used for thermal management in EV and energy storage systems. This aluminum cold plate with embedded copper tube is one of the most efficient solutions.
Liquid cooling plate, as known as water cold plate, are the most efficient method of heat removal. The metal plate (typically aluminum or copper) that possesses internal tubing to allow liquids to flow through it. When a cold plate is placed on an electronic component that requires cooling, it absorbs and dissipates the heat from the component to the liquid that is then cycled through the system.
The flow paths inside the cold plates can be machined in various shapes and sizes, and can allow cold plates to more effectively absorb and transfer large amounts of heat.

Types of liquid cooling plates:
According to different process, Liquid cooling plates can be divided into copper tube liquid cooling plates, vacuum brazing liquid cooling plate, Friction stir welding liquid cooling plate(fsw aluminum liquild cold plate), etc.
Copper tube liquid cooling plate:
Copper tube liquid cooling plate is a water cooling plate in which the corresponding channel shape groove is processed by CNC on the substrate, and then the copper tube is inserted, At the same time, the grooves are added with high thermal conductivity epoxy resin or solder paste that can strengthen and assist heat transfer.

Vacuum brazing liquid cold plate:
Vacuum brazing is the use of a solder with a melting point lower than the melting point of the parent material under vacuum, and at a temperature lower than the melting point of the parent metal but higher than the melting point of the solder, using liquid solder to wet, spread and fill the surface of the base metal to realize the connection between parts. The vacuum brazed water cooled cold plate plate uses this principle to realize the connection of the aluminum base plate, the composite brazing material plate and the aluminum cover plate.

Friction stir welding liquid cooling plate:
Friction stir welding liquid cooling plate (FSW water cooling plate) use a special shaped hard stirring head to rotate and insert the welded body, and generate heat by friction with the welded metal. Through the friction stir, the joint metal is in a plastic state. The stirring finger rod moves forward along the welding direction while rotating. Realize the connection of materials under the combined action of heat engine.

The advantage of using liquid cooling plate
Water cooling plate is a kind efficient heat sink of IGBT, GTO and other power elements. It can control the temperature of the power module so that it does not exceed the maximum temperature specified in the standard and specification under the working conditions.
So as to achieve the power module safe, stable and reliable operation and extend the service life of the equipment.

Compared with air cooling, the advantages of liquid cooling plate
Air cooling can't meet the current heat dissipation design requirements.
At present, the demand for heat dissipation is getting higher and higher, the requirement of heat consumption is higher and higher, so a more efficient heat dissipation system is required. Therefore, the water cooling plate is more in line with the current market's heat dissipation requirement.
Compared with the air cooled system, the heat capacity of water is four times that of air, so the water cooled system has a good thermal load capacity, and at the same temperature rise and mass flow rate, the heat absorbed by water is four times that of air.
In addition to thermal performance, an added benefit of liquid cooling is noise reduction, operating near inaudible levels.

What kind of liquid is used for cold plate?
The most common liquid used in cold plate is pure water, and we can use other liquid according the requirement of consumer. Such as: glycol, refrigerant, etc.

Why is copper material used more for inlet/outlet connector of the liquid cooling plate ?
Firstly, because the inlet/outlet connector of the liquid cooling plate is attached to the chip and absorbs & transfers heat, the material must have a higher thermal conductivity. Electronic chips need to quickly dissipate heat, so materials with higher thermal conductivity are needed, and metal materials are the first choice. The thermal conductivity of copper is 377, aluminum is 237, and silver is 412. Because the cost of silver is too high, it will not be used as inlet/outlet connector.
And, copper is easier to process and formed.
In contrast, copper is the best choice to use as inlet/outlet connector of the liquid cooling plate.

Is it better to have more pipes in the liquid cooling plate?
The more pipes of the liquid cooling plate, the more heat it can take away, and better for heat dissipation. However, more pipes will also increase the cost, so we will arrange the pipes according to the customer's heat dissipation requirements.
